In Search of The Perfect Vagina

anatomy, Television

“If you’d told me three months ago that I’d let a plastic surgeon examine my froufrou, that I’d show it to another woman (who wasn’t a doctor) and then allow an artist to take a cast of my Mary, I’d have laughed you out of the house. But it’s extraordinary how documentary-making changes your mind about even the most concrete of things . . . “

–Lisa Rogers, presenter of Channel 4 documentary “The Perfect Vagina”

Rogers’ film is a poignant exploration of why young women in the UK seek labiaplasty and hymenoplasty.

  1. Oh well, off on a semi-tangent (but I was on a train through Detroit today, and Amtrak goes about 5 mph through Detroit, I think because of an accident a few years back (though I don’t know for sure)) – you get a nice long look at the backside of capitalism, as it were, I thought, looking at a snowy “over the hills and through the dale/to grandmother’s house we go” kind of field, smack in the middle of Detroit…a few ponies wouldn’t have been out of place…

    I thought:

“this isn’t the penis of capitalism
this is the vulva, vagina, uterus…”

I’m fascinated by the idea of cities as gendered…”urban renewal” as labioplasty, gynoplasty. What’s the natural look for a city? Concertina wire / chastity belt around any functioning (multinational?) corporations in the city.

well, I said it was a tangent.

  2. I will never understand why women want to have their vulva’s sliced and diced. Get to know the vulva you have, get to love it, explore it, understand it and appreciate it because the vula/vagina is amazing in all it does, the life it can bring forth and the total bliss it can bring.I am a endocrine physiologist and if you only knew the beautiful, incredible dance and dash of hormones that are brought about by these organs you would understand just how amazing it all is.
    Kind regards,
    Judith

    Hi Judith,

Someone I knew who was in grad school, research to do with ovaries, referred to the “hormonal cascade.” Cascade. Pure poetry.

  4. Yes it truly is incredible whether it be the reproductive hormones or the hormones of orgasm. The burst of Oxytocin and endorphines can reach staggering levels, enough to release e consciousness for short times. More women would experience the full range of possibilities if they did not treat their vulva’s and sex so superficially and took the time to delve deeper (pardon the pun!) into it.
